Seaspan launches LNG dual-fuel containership
Seaspan Corporation has launched its first vessel in a series of 10 new 15,000 TEU liquified natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel containerships at Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in South Korea.
The new ship, ZIM Sammy Ofer, left on 15 October and is set to enter service under a long-term charter to Israeli shipping company ZIM in 2023.
The development of the 10 new ships was ordered in February 2021, with the expectation that they will be delivered and used for transporting goods from China and South Korea to US East Coast and the Caribbean in 2023 and 2024.
The new announcement follows ZIM’s announcement earlier this year, having signed a 10-year LNG bunkering agreement with Shell valued at more than $1 billion (€997,800,000).
