Hapag-Lloyd and Mabanaft explore supply of ammonia as bunker fuel

Hapag-Lloyd has signed a MoU with Mabanaft to explore the potential for the supply of ammonia as a bunker fuel to Hapag-Lloyd in and around the Port of Hamburg, Germany and the Port of Houston, Texas, USA.

The two companies will assess the viability of and the options for the safe handling of clean ammonia as a bunker fuel in and around the Port of Hamburg. They will also evaluate the commercial, technical, and regulatory requirements and correspond with all relevant stakeholders as part of this initiative. A similar approach will then be used at the Port of Houston.

Mabanaft is currently developing infrastructure in Hamburg for the import and supply of clean ammonia, along with a larger infrastructure investment programme, where they will create a platform for low-carbon fuel alternatives.

The companies hope to provide hydrogen to Germany in 2026, with an import terminal planned at Mabanaft’s Blumensand terminal.
