How long have you been in the breakbulk industry?

I started in 1989 at Herfurth, and then I spent 1 year in New Orleans as a trainee for Forest Lines operating the LASH vessels between Europe and the US Gulf & East coast.

Herfurth itself is a 6th generation of a family company,  created in 1899, and has always been active in the breakbulk industry; as a shipping line for many years, as a shipping agent, and now mostly as a forwarder.

What's been the biggest change you have seen in the breakbulk market in that time?

There’s been a loss of continuity in the people we meet. With more turnover in staff, there sometimes results a loss of business because of a loss of contacts. Worldwide specialized networks became a must!

What's the best part of your role?

Networking; I love to meet people. I love looking for competent people, and motivating young people to build up and commercialise their experience. I like to keep these kinds of people and help them grow inside our organisation.

What do you find is the most challenging part of your role?

Getting the company talent motivated, and keeping them motivated!

We also enjoy the challenge of going to big companies and convincing them that working with a smaller, sharper and dedicated team of specialists can make all the difference, compared to working with giants in the market.

We’re also striving to drive forward digital transformation.

You must travel a lot for work, what's your favourite country to travel to for work?

There is something interesting to be found in all the continents and countries. However, I do have a personal emotional preference for Africa!

What advice would you give your 21-year-old self?

Go forward, and don’t ever be afraid of the unknown – learn by doing it!

Be patient and stay loyal to your company, your time will come!

And finally, get to know and meet as many people as you can! Experience different cultures and different businesses.

As we are a community travelling all the time, what book would your recommend to fill the time on those long flights?

Well, I read a lot of junk, but if I had to pick I’d say anything about cars and ICT.

Do you have a favourite bar or restaurant in Antwerp?

For a restaurant I’d have to say Tante Yvonne. It’s a family business, flexible, motivated, with excellent price & quality (Sounds almost like Herfurth). Make sure you ask for Julian!

My favourite bar would be Chasse Royale, where you can meet a lot of people ‘finishing’ their networking after Antwerp XL. the food’s nice food as well!

What are you most looking forward to at AntwerpXL 2020?

We’re looking forward to consolidating our fast-growing business since the creation of our concept, ‘M-Star Projects powered by Herfurth Logistics’. We can’t wait to further develop new specialties & niche markets, and of course to meet all our friends & colleagues.
